AI Cards® & Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards

Get the AI Cards® & Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards — to get an overview of AI, find the AI that helps you and use it responsibly

New AI tools and use cases appear every week, and it's hard to keep track. And once you've found one, how do you know it's safe and fair to use?

The challenge

  • AI Cards® — give you an overview of AI. They let you find out how AI can help you

  • Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards — make sure no one gets hurt

In physical and digital form.

What you get

Who is this for?

Anyone who wants to understand what AI can do and use it responsibly.

AI Cards®

Its 3 principles

  • User perspective. The AI Cards® are written from the user's perspective, so everyone can understand them.

  • Capabilities, not tools. If you chase the latest tool, you'll always be behind. That's why the AI Cards® focus on AI capabilities, which stay stable over time. Once you've found the capability you need, you can look at which current tool does it best.

  • Value first. The AI Cards® don't compare tools by price. They start with business value and let that guide your decisions.

What you get from the AI Cards®

  • Get an overview of AI

We‘ve organized AI into different categories to help manage its complexity — much like classifying music into genres.

How the AI Cards® are organized

The AI Cards® follow a deliberate structure.

  • 3 overall themes

  • 12 AI categories or parent cards

  • 93 AI capability cards or child cards, each stating 3 example use cases on its backside

  • Easy way to talk with your colleagues about AI

A great starting point is to pick a single AI category — such as „AI finds and organizes information.“ Suppose you‘re working on a project and need various pieces of data. You could ask: „Wouldn‘t it be useful if we could automatically gather and sort all the relevant information?“ And just like that, you‘re talking about an AI category. You might even show your colleagues the corresponding AI Cards® for that category.

If a colleague brings up an AI use case they‘ve heard about, simply pull out your AI Cards® and ask: „What exactly are we talking about?“ By matching their use case to the relevant AI Cards®, everyone gains clarity on which category — and specific technologies — are involved.

  • See where you can use AI in your workplace

Start by making a quick list of the things you do every day at work. Go through the AI Cards® and choose the ones that could support your day-to-day tasks. From your selection, pick the three cards that seem most likely to make a real difference. Write one sentence describing how you'd use them together: what input the AI would handle, how it would process that input, and what output or action would result. Congratulations! You've just outlined how AI can assist you in your work.

Alternatively, start with the AI Cards® and keep your overall role in mind. Exploring the cards first can inspire bigger ideas, so you don't stop at routine tasks but discover ways AI could truly transform how you work.

Now that you've outlined how AI can help you, ask an AI assistant which current tool does it best.

Each card states 3 example use cases for that capability

Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards

AI has already caused real harm: people have been wrongly denied jobs, flagged as criminals and treated unfairly in healthcare. Organizations have paid with lawsuits, fines and lost trust, and so has AI itself.

What the Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards are

We‘ve organized AI ethics into five categories. Each card covers one ethical principle, explains it in plain language, and tells you how to mitigate the risk. This allows you to consider all ethical perspectives without overlooking any, and find the ones most relevant to you and your use of AI.

The cards are based on the EU AI Act, Responsible AI frameworks from Microsoft, Google, and IBM, and international standards from the UN, OECD, and IEEE. On the back of each card you‘ll find the specific sources it is based on.

In brief:

  • 5 categories or parent cards

  • 16 Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards, each giving mitigation suggestions and stating what this card is based on

You can use them in two ways:

  • Check your own AI use

Once you've picked the AI Cards® that could help you in your work, turn to the Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards. Check whether your AI use could cause harm, and shape it responsibly.

  • Lead ethical discussions with colleagues

Some people are skeptical about AI for good reasons. The Ethical Risk Mitigation Cards give you a structured way to have those conversations. Point to specific cards and ask: are we talking about this concern? Have we considered this one? Then turn the card around — on the back you‘ll find concrete suggestions for how to mitigate that risk. This turns a conversation that might have been fearful and blocking progress into one focused on how to move forward responsibly.
